SYNOPSIS

The village of Noite Velha inhabits the border between tradition and modernity. There are some two hundred houses surrounded by a forest of trees as old as the stories told by the elders. In a small house by the roadside, Gilmara (35) and her grandmother Benvinda (93) live. Benvinda is a death doula, she makes the transition to the afterlife, planting souls in trees that populate the town’s forest. When a lumber company arrives in the region, Gilmara sees an opportunity to change her life. She starts dedicating her days to cutting down the trees planted by generations of women in her family. At the company, she falls in love with Bárbara (33), a pregnant truck driver. Gil begins to be haunted by supernatural events - it is the gift of death hovering over Gilmara. As Benvinda's health deteriorates, the grandmother has a last wish: for her granddaughter to plant her soul and assist in her transition to the afterlife. Frightened by what her gift might mean (and cause) to Bárbara and her baby, Gilmara tries to deny her gift. It is only when Bárbara goes into labor that Gil finally faces her destiny. The baby's arrival and Benvinda's departure are intertwined in Gil’s coming of age. Gilmara plants grandmother’s soul in a ritual that heals their old wounds.
